What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a longer-term, more open-ended therapy than counseling. It is appropriate if the problem is not new, but is recurrent. This could include difficulty sustaining personal relationships, self-defeating patterns of thought and/or behavior, persistent relapses into drug or alcohol abuse, or significant and unrelenting emotional pain. As often as not, these problems have roots in childhood trauma that continues to undermine self-esteem and well-being.
Psychotherapy will not be effective if it is limited to the short term or pursued on an “on again off again” manner. More than one session per week is often needed. A good “fit” between client and therapist is one of the most important factors for a successful outcome.
